Vacation takes moviegoers on an infernal ride

It would be difficult to conceive of a movie more out of touch with reality and decency than the recently released remake of Vacation. Admittedly, secular cultural forces started dissembling the nuclear family long before Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), in the original 1983 film, station-wagoned his wife, daughter, and son, Rusty, from Chicago to fictional Walley World in Los Angeles. Directors John Daley and Jonathan Goldstein-also two of the remake's three writers-roll out a traditional family unit in the new version, but they plaster it in nastiness.

The Jim Gaffigan Show premiered on TV Land on July 15-and Gaffigan's reputation as a "clean Christian comedian" is on trial in the first episode. His wife (Ashley Williams) asks him to pick up a Bible from church, a gift from their priest, before he heads to do his stand-up set. The Bible turns out to be a massive tome that Jim has to carry around the rest of the night under the scoffs from his expletive-dropping comedian friends.

Eyes inside

July 24, 2015 Throwable, tactical camera will give police advance warning of dangers

Knowing what or who is behind a closed door or in an unseen area can mean the difference between life and death for police and first responders. Praying for peaches

July 7, 2015 When we expand our view of prayer (of God!) and are open to new and creative ways of praying, we join the cloud of witnesses in the Bible who prayed unusual prayers

My father hasn't done well with the cherry tree this year. My husband looked up the symptoms and it seems a fungus that goes for pitted fruit is the culprit. This morning we went to pick raspberries near the peach tree and we found the same ominous rot spot on a cluster of peaches we had seen on the cherries. As I filled my bucket with berries I heard my father start praying for the peach tree-that God would have mercy on it, that disease would not claim it.

Standing on His precious promises

June 18, 2015 Pick a promise, any promise, and stand upon it, and tell God you are standing upon it

In Act 2, Scene 3 of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the kindly Friar says to Romeo, who is being vague and evasive about the jam he is in: "Riddling confession finds but riddling shrift." In other words, vague confessions can only be given vague and unsatisfactory counsel or absolution.
